Office of the Mayor
The mayor is elected for a four year term. The mayor enforces the Mayor/Council Plan, city ordinances, orders, and applicable statutes. He supervises all departments of city government and the conduct of all city officers and employees under his jurisdiction. Each department reports to him.
History
Burkesville is a Kentucky home rule city with a population of 1521. Burkesville was incorporated as a city in 1846 and was named after Isham Burk, a prominent leading citizen at that time.
In the nineteenth century when water transportation was feasible, riverboats navigated the Cumberland River which runs through the city providing goods to Burkesville and shipping crops and other manufactured items to other locations. The river is used today by recreational watercraft.
Notable residents in our area include two former governors of Kentucky, Thomas E. Bramlette & Preston H. Leslie, both born in Cumberland County. Thomas Lincoln, the father of President Abraham Lincoln our 16th president, served as constable of Cumberland County from 1802-1804. Stanley Carter Pace, a decorated World War II hero and past Chief Executive Officer of both TRW and General Dynamics was born and raised in Burkesville. David L. Williams, former KY State Senator is a resident of Burkesville. He served as a Republican State Senator from 1992 until his retirement in 2011. Judge Williams served as KY State Senate President for an extended term. He is now serving as 40th Circuit Court Judge in Kentucky.

City Clerk Marquetta Riley: Assists the executive authority in administering all phases of city government. The city clerk serves as the city treasurer and the city personnel director. The city clerk assists the deputy clerk with water accounting operations and banking transactions. The clerk assists the mayor in preparing the annual budget and keeps proper accounting records to ensure ethical and accountable maintenance of public funds. The city clerk duties for administrative council meetings includes the preparation of presentation materials, regular attendance of city council meetings, and the reporting of council meeting minutes. The city clerk and deputy clerk maintain city governing documents including policies, procedures, orders, resolutions, and forms used by residents to request and report on services. Ms. Riley has an Associates of Science Degree from Daymar College, is a Kentucky Certified Municipal Clerk having been awarded this by the Kentucky Municipal Clerks Association and Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, University of Kentucky. She is also a Notary Public. | |
Deputy City Clerk April Thrasher: Billing and collecting of utility service fees in the city. The deputy clerk prepares, proofs and mails tax notices, licenses, fees, and other city revenue documents. The deputy clerk collects payments, keeps accurate records, and manages bank deposits during normal daily operation. In addition, the deputy clerk assists the city clerk with those duties. |
City of Burkesville Council
The city council is elected for a two year term. The Council duties are establishing codes, rules, ordinances, municipal orders, and regulations for the public health, safety and welfare to the public. Click here for more information on city council membership. The Council does not perform any executive functions except those assigned by statute.
Council Meeting
City of Burkesville Council meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 5 pm in the City Hall conference room. All are invited.
